When Shah Rukh Khan gave Zero in 2018, many people out there, including some of his admirers, started writing him off. The criticism somewhere affected him too and he took a conscious break from the big screen. But his absence felt disturbing. A void came on the big screen when he was not there. So, when in 2022, he gave 3 impressive cameos in Brahmastra, Laal Singh Chaddha and Rocketry, the excitement to see him back was palpable.
The elusive start to 2023
Then came the elusive 2023 and SRK proved why he is the indisputable king of Hindi cinema. The first month itself, the Badshah gave a gigantic box office success with Pathaan. Crossing the figures of Baahubali 2, collecting over Rs 510 crores domestically, it emerged the highest grossing Hindi film of all time. Worldwide, it crossed over Rs 1000 crores, and proved the naysayers wrong. It showed them the power he still holds over the audience.
Jawan magic
If Pathaan was a storm, SRK’s next release of 2023, Jawan was a tsunami. The film surpassed even Pathaan’s collection. Jawan collected over Rs 550 crores at the Hindi box office, and worldwide crossed Pathaan too. It now stands as the highest grossing Hindi film surpassing Gadar 2 and Pathaan. So, technically SRK beat himself at the box office this year.
The expected storm of Dunki
While he has two magnanimous successes under his belt already, the year is far from over for King Khan. He still has his third release of the year left as he closes 2023 with Dunki. And to mark his birthday on November 2, Shah Rukh Khan unveiled Dunki Drop 1, the first look from the film. The excitement around it just shows how special Christmas is going to be. It might even cross the collections of Jawan. Dunki has an Indian release date of December 22, 2023, alongside Prabhas starrer Salaar: Part 1- Ceasefire. It releases a day prior internationally.
The successes at the box office are just mere numbers, but SRK’s stardom is way beyond that. The love and adulation he receives is way above any of these numbers. All these box office figures are just another addition to his stardom. The same people who had written SRK off post 2018, have been singing his praises now. It just shows that Shah Rukh Khan is an emotion, he is not a phase that will pass. He is an era of his own. 2023 just reinvented the Shah Rukh Khan mania in the truest sense.
